Feature Overview

In the fast-paced world of healthcare, efficiency is everything. That’s why we’re excited to introduce the EMMA Smart Toolkit—a powerful new feature that combines Smart Chat and AI Digest into a single, streamlined experience. With just one click, you can access EMMA’s advanced capabilities, making it easier than ever to review incoming clinical documentation, summarize key insights, create patient profiles, summarize research papers and much more.


Why we built this 

Creating a unified toolkit reduces the steps you need to take to gather essential insights, complete patient forms and perform tasks adjacent to patient care. It also sets the stage for future innovations, ensuring that EMMA continues to evolve as an essential partner in your daily practice.


How-To Guide

  1. Click on the EMMA Icon on the Chrome extension to launch the feature

  2. The chat box serves as the primary interface for interacting with EMMA. Select from one of the options     provided to start the conversation or ask a question about the webpage you are currently viewing.

  3. EMMA will provide a relevant response and auto generate questions to further continue the conversation.

  4. You can save questions or instructions that you frequently use as Custom Instructions (which can be viewed in the side panel)

  5. You can even import the information to the notepad in Empathia or copy to your clipboard

  6. From the top of the chat box, you can easily access and launch other tools within the toolkit. Use the Scan Page tool to scan information on a webpage. You can scan referral letters, new patient registration forms or reports that contain patient data.

  7. A summary of the page that is scanned will appear in the chat box. You can simply import the summary to your notepad in the Chrome extension, as part of your pre-intake workflow.


  8. You can use Autofill tool after scanning any relevant information, to complete web forms like

    • Patient profile
    • Medication Reconciliation Forms
    • Referral Forms
  9. When you click on the Autofill button, a list of resources will appear - these are the summaries of different pages you have scanned. Simply choose the relevant item to populate your desired form, then click Autofill Form to complete the process.

  10. From the top right of the chat box, you can easily reset the chat history. Simply click "New Chat" and then "Ok" to reset the chat. This will erase the previous conversations in the EMMA Toolkit. 

Please Note: You will still have access to your Saved Instructions.   


Use cases & Clinical Scenario

Here is an example of how EMMA toolkit can help you get started with a new patient referral.

  1. Scan the e-fax of a new patient referral then use Autofill to create a patient profile in your EMR.
  2. Ask EMMA to summarize key results from the patient's MRI report and import the results to your notepad.
  3. As you review medical research on treatment options for the patient’s condition, ask EMMA to  summarize the key recommendations from the paper.
  4. Incorporate the summarized insights into your documentation to support your clinical decision-making process.


Best Practices and Tips

Common Use Tips

  • Review the auto-filled data promptly to ensure accuracy. Cross-reference with original documents for verification, especially for critical information like patient demographic information, insurance number, and medications.
  • Ask questions related to information on that particular webpage only; memory is not carried over between different web pages.

Frequent Missteps to Avoid: Ensure that documents are clear and legible when scanning to avoid issues with data extraction.

Medical Knowledge Search:

  1. Get synthesized summaries relevant to the patient’s condition without manually searching multiple databases.
  2. Quickly summarize latest medical information from reliable sources like PubMed, OpenEvidence, and UpToDate.

  1. What types of documents can be scanned?

    The feature supports web pages, and web forms (typically found in EMRs)

  2. How accurate is the data extraction?

    The AI is designed for high accuracy, but clinicians should always verify the extracted data for completeness.

  1. Data not populating correctly: Check the clarity and formatting of the scanned documents. Ensure that all necessary information is present and legible.
