Using Empathia AI in Emergency Medicine: ER/ED Practice Tips

For Emergency Department physicians, efficiency and accuracy are essential. We understand that medical situations evolve rapidly, and your documentation must capture all critical details. To support you, we’ve designed Empathia to seamlessly integrate into your workflow—allowing you to transcribe the consultation, dictate on the go and add reassessment (updated lab results, specialty consultations, etc), review your final note before entering it into your EMR.

Here are the key steps to help you optimize your workflow.

1. Set Up Your Profile

  • Navigate to your profile settings & set Emergency Medicine as your Specialty

  • If you practice at different locations, you can set up different clinics and capture the specific specialty at each clinic.

2. Start Recording or Dictation in the App or Tablet

  •  If you have multiple clinics set up in your account, ensure to select the ER clinic before you start recording your note

  • Click on the arrow next to New Visit and select “Start Dictation”

  • Tap "Start Recording" to begin your note.

3. Review Your SOAP Note

  • You can review the SOAP note directly from the app after completing your dictation

  • If you prefer to use only the content of your dictation you can review it in the "Dictation" tab in the web portal.

4. Add a Reassessment

  • Upload additional files like lab results:
    • On the Encounter page, click on “EMMA” icon, on the top right corner. Choose either to take a new picture of patient records or upload existing images from your device.

  • Add "Supplementary Recording": Simply click on the mic icon in the encounter list and select between "Continue Recording" vs "Section Dictation".
    • "Continue Recording" will update the entire notes with updated information
    • "Section Dictation": Your reassessment will be added as a separate section with a timestamp to your existing note.

5. Review Your Discharge Summary

  • A discharge summary is auto generated for ER physicians and appears as a separate tab in your encounter

6.  Finish Up

  • Simply copy the final SOAP note to your EMR and print the Discharge Summary for your patient to review.

Tips

Many ER doctors prefer using iPads for recordings on the go, taking advantage of the Notepad feature along with Apple Pencil's scribble capability. Check out more here.
